Another Advantage of VoIP: Data You Can Use
There are a number of advantages to switching over to a VoIP system, including lower costs due to Internet-based calls. But it’s that same connection – over the Net – that can also work to a businesses’ advantage when it’s looking for useful data about its customers.
In a recent blog post, tech writer Dana Rasmussen looked at some of the benefits of going with VoIP that some companies might not even be aware of. She referred to a research piece by Syncsort CEO Lonne Jaffe, when he wrote about “How to Unlock Big Data’s Big Potential.”
Both Rasmussen and Jaffe agree that while larger companies in the past were able to cull through user information to extract important data – they point to search engines like Google (News - Alert), Yahoo and others – some newer companies have yet to catch up. That doesn’t mean they can’t. It just means they need to take the proper steps to assure they’re getting the data they need about their customers to make smarter decisions.
Jaffe offerred some suggestions about utilizing VoIP, including how to make the best of the information you already have; that means:
Find out all you can about your calls: where they come from, who the people are, and how often they call. These demographics will make it easier to market to a core customer base.
Personal information can be collected, depending on what the VoIP providers asks for. Names, emails, and other pertinent information can be quite useful in more targeted marketing. One caveat: many are uncomfortable giving this info out, fearing being mass-marketed to. Assurances of privacy are vital.
Determining where your customers are finding your number is also beneficial in understanding what types of Internet marketing programs are working. Whether you have ads online or in print, it’s easy to see how and where customers are coming from by tracking how many calls are made to a given phone number.
