Growth Ahead for VoIP Equipment Market: Infonetics
December 15, 2009
By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor
According to the latest research report from Campbell, Calif.–based Infonetics Research (News - Alert), revenues for the core IMS equipment market declined 39 percent in 3Q09.
Despite this drop, however, the market research firm is predicting the VoIP equipment market will continue to hold steady with healthy growth in the near future as a result of more VoIP services being adopted and service providers migrating VoIP services to IMS networks.
According to Diane Myers, directing analyst for service provider VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Research, “This stability is a very good sign for the industry, which has seen a tumultuous year. We are still expecting about a 30 percent drop in worldwide revenue for the overall 2009 year compared to 2008,' Myers said.
Infonetics also reported that worldwide session border controller or “SBC” revenues increased half a percent from 2Q09 to 3Q09 and hit $38.7 million. Also, for the second quarter in a row, worldwide revenues for trunk media gateways increased by 14 percent.
'Despite the drop, it was a very solid quarter for IMS equipment, which is tracking right in line with subscriber growth and new deployments,” Myers said.
We expect the worldwide IMS equipment market to more than double in 2009, and to grow to $1.6 billion by 2013.'

- The Advantages of Using SIP Trunks over a PRI from the Phone Company: A Primary Rate Interface (PRI) is the basic connection used by phone companies that allow multiple voice and data paths to share a common circuit. The PRI consists of 23 B channels, which carry voice and data, and 1 D channel, which carries signaling data for the other 23 channels. This ratio is fixed and channels must be added in multiples of 23 should you need to add more. Each PRI requires data communication hardware on either end.
- VoIP and Business Continuity: An organization's communication system is the most important aspect of any business continuity plan. Without an effective method for people to communicate with one other, all other activities become moot.
- What is a SIP trunk?: A SIP trunk is a data connection that utilizes Session Initiated Protocol (SIP) and carries voice over IP (VoIP) traffic. The SIP trunk defines the connection between two voice switches and can carry multiple VoIP calls simultaneously. The trunk is then divided into logical pathways, called channels. Each channel carries one voice conversation.
