What It's Like to Work at VoIP Innovations
Since I’ve been working at VoIP Innovations (News - Alert) I’ve had multiple people ask me what it’s like to work there. I always have the same answer – It’s AWESOME. I know you all love reading about the news and updates I usually post, but I want to take this post to really introduce you to VoIP Innovations.
Let me first give you a little background info on the company and how it got to be where it’s at today. VoIP Innovations is a portfolio company of ABG Capital, a unique organization that is focused on supporting its portfolio companies through consolidating services such as accounting, legal, IT, software development, HR, marketing communications and other services. ABG Capital has four portfolio companies: Inspira, GlobalPOPs, End User Services and of course, VoIP Innovations.
ABG Capital was formed in 1992 by Gerard Tapolci and since his passing, the company has been taken over by his son, CEO Jeff Tapolci. If you’re wondering why that last name sounds familiar, it’s because the president of VoIP Innovations, Jason Tapolci is his brother. These two have made it their mission to keep the Mom and Pop atmosphere alive within all of the companies because that was the original culture that helped get us to where we are today.
If you’re a frequent visitor to our social media sites or our blog, then you’ve seen the pictures and videos I’m constantly posting. As I already mentioned, working for VoIP Innovations is awesome. The culture and atmosphere is unlike any other I’ve ever been a part of; it’s one big family here! Let me give you a few examples of some of things we do that have helped to rank us No. 6 on the 2013 Best Places to Work in PA list.
Giving Back Initiatives
We are extremely focused on supporting our community and giving back as much as we can. You may remember from past blog posts that we visited the National Cemeteries of the Alleghenies to clean off headstones to help them prepare for their Memorial Day Festivities. We’ll also be visiting the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in January to Volunteer. One thing that’s different about our volunteering initiatives is that employees aren’t forced to go on their own time or by themselves. As a company, we take a half-day on a Friday and volunteer our time together. It’s really a great feeling to be a part of that!
Another huge piece to our giving back initiatives is the fundraising we do for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We have a payroll deduction system in place where employees can have donations automatically taken out of their paycheck, we sell raffle tickets for giant Mardi Gras and Holiday gift baskets, and we sell flowers for Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. After all of the contributions from these activities are collected, ABG Capital will match that total amount. We’ve been granting wishes for years now, but this year we’ve hit a new milestone. We’re proud to announce that we’ve been able to make two wishes come true because we donated $7,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation!
As a company we participate in one sporting event each quarter. Everyone gets to work a half day on the Friday of the game and we get to go out and have fun for an afternoon! This year we got to go bowling in February, play kickball in April, play softball in August and have our Annual Turkey Bowl football game in November. The competition during these games is high and people rightly earn the awards we present to them at our Holiday Party. Below are the recipients from VoIP Innovations who was given a 2013 Sports Award.
Bowling: Gutter Ball Guru – Sally Stewart (Porting)
Kickball: VoIP Innovations must not have made it to the game because no one from there got a kickball award.
Softball: MVP – Natalie DeCario (Hey that’s me!)
Best Fence Jumper – Dave Smith (Porting)
Other Office Things
So now it’s time to get into the REALLY cool stuff that goes on here. This year was the first year we instituted Tend to You Breaks. Twice a day, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., everyone would get up and go outside for 10-15 minutes. We’d play catch, Frisbee, football, hockey or even just walk around the building a few times. You have no idea how refreshing it is it get outside and play a little hockey during the summer when you really want a break from work. It’s a little more difficult now that we have all this snow, but we still try to get away from our desks a few times day! Studies have even shown that taking short breaks makes you more productive! And yes, that’s the ammunition you need to get your boss on board with this idea.
The next fun perk that we get is free lunch every Friday. We’ll have pizza, sandwiches or wraps and then once a month we have different lunch committees put together a lunch for everyone. We’ve had things like soup bars, nacho/potato bars, pasta, fish sandwiches, hamburgers and hotdogs and even Chinese food. It’s always fun to see what these committees will come up with next.
I’m almost done bragging about our office perks, don’t worry! You may have seen in movies and TV shows that some companies actually allow their employees to have fun in the office. We’re one of those companies! I’ve seen Nerf guns, all different shapes of stress balls that fly around constantly and I’ve even seen pick-up whiffle ball and football games!
I saved the best for last – Scotch Friday. The work week is stressful and we’ve all been hit that “end of the week breaking point” before. There’s nothing better hearing the Scotch Alarm, leaving your desk and gathering in the kitchen for a drink and some laughs with your co-workers.
Now I’m sure most of you have seen or heard of the Viral Video, David After the Dentist. At one point in the video he asks, “Is this real life?” Every day that I walk into our office I ask myself this question! The owners of our company are some of the best people I know and they’ve truly created a culture that’s unlike any other. They care about their employees and want to see them come to work with a smile on their face and actually enjoy their day.And with that being said, here’s a huge shout out to our Managers and Executive Team who work hard every day to keep our unique culture flourishing. Thank you!
