Starting on Saturday, December 7, everyone will have the opportunity to select 844 as their new toll-free area code. Currently the toll-free area codes available to the public are 800, 888, 877, 866 and 855, but because of the popularity of using vanity numbers, the FCC has introduced the 844 area code to the mix.

The attractiveness of vanity toll-free numbers is a direct result of being able to create a memorable phone number for a business. An example of what a vanity number might look like is 1-844-VOIPLUV (we know everyone will be fighting over this vanity number!). Using a number like this makes it easy for customers to remember and what ultimately makes a business seem to look better from a promotional standpoint.

VoIP Innovations (News - Alert) has begun taking requests for vanity toll-free numbers in its Wholesale VoIP BackOffice, Titanium III. If a customer is interested in making a request for an 844 number, they should go into the Order Local/toll-free DIDs menu and do a Vanity Search for their desired number. The deadline for making toll-free requests is 12 p.m. (EST) on Friday, December 6. Any requests made after this deadline will be handled during regular business hours starting on Monday, December 9 and in the order they were received.

All customers should be advised that by making this request they are not guaranteed to get the number they want. The addition of the 844 area code will be available worldwide and is on a first-come, first-served basis. We understand that having a vanity toll-free number is important for our customers and their businesses, and that is why we want customers to start requesting their vanity toll-free numbers today!

In case you were interested in a short history of toll-free numbers, they were established as a way to cut the costs from the customer and put it on the business. The 800 area code was introduced during the late 1960s and since then has been rapidly growing more popular. According to TollFreeNumbers.com, when toll-free numbers became truly portable, they gave users more control of the service and ramped up the value. Since the toll-free craze is expected to have continued growth, 833 and 822 have already been reserved as the next set of area codes.
